Today, on Holocaust Remembrance Day, we remember the suffering of the millions of victims caused by the machinery of terror designed by the Nazi regime. Shocked by the gravity of this crime, the international community established mechanisms to prevent and punish the commission of international crimes and defend the dignity of the victims, among them, institutions for the international protection of human rights, the application of the principle of universal jurisdiction, or the signature of the Rome Statute, which in 1998 created an international criminal court to prosecute perpetrators of the most abhorrent crimes.
Nevertheless, 75 years after that “Never Again”, the World continues witnessing the use of chemical weapons in Syria, where more than half million people have lost their lives in a conflict that has lasted longer than 7 years. At the same time, impunity prevails in countries such as Sri Lanka, Libya or Bangladesh.
At The Guernica Group, we continue fighting, on a daily basis, to protect and advance victims’ rights to Truth and Justice, by using the best legal tools available to us. Only if we work together and fight to build Justice without borders, we will create a World where accountability could serve to effectively avoid the commission of atrocities such as the one that we are commemorating today.
Comunicado sobre el Día de Conmemoración del Holocausto
Hoy, en el Día de Conmemoración del Holocausto, recordamos el sufrimiento de los millones de víctimas causadas por la maquinaria del terror Nazi. Conmocionada por la gravedad de este crimen, la comunidad internacional diseñó mecanismos para prevenir y castigar la comisión de crímenes internacionales y reivindicar la dignidad de las víctimas, entre ellas, instituciones de protección internacional de derechos humanos, el principio de justicia universal, o la firma del estatuto de Roma, que en 1998 por fin creaba un tribunal penal internacional capaz de perseguir a los perpetradores de los crímenes más abominables.
Sin embargo, 75 años después de ese “Nunca Más”, el mundo sigue siendo testigo del uso de armas químicas en Siria, donde más de medio millón de personas han perdido la vida en un conflicto que ya dura más de 7 años. Al mismo tiempo, la impunidad sigue imperando en países como Sri Lanka, Libia o Bangladesh.
Desde el Grupo Guernica luchamos todos los días por hacer efectivos los derechos de Verdad y Justicia de las víctimas, haciendo uso de todas las herramientas legales a nuestro alcance. Solo si trabajamos juntos podremos crear un mundo en el que la Justicia que no entienda de fronteras, y sirva para evitar la comisión de atrocidades como la que hoy tristemente recordamos.
