International Criminal Court, 2016, Bemba case, Judgment pursuant to Article 74 of the Statute

On 21 March 2016, the International Criminal Court found Jean-Pierre Bemba Gombo guilty for his responsibility in the crimes committed in Central African Republic from on or about 26 October 2002 to 15 March 2003 by a contingent of Mouvement de Libération du Congo troops. He was found guilty of two counts of crimes against humanity (murder and rape) and three counts of war crimes (murder, rape, and pillaging) and sentenced, on 21 June 2016, to 18 years of imprisonment. The case is currently on appeal. Mr Bemba was convicted on the basis of command responsibility, as he was the person effectively acting as a military commander with effective authority and control over the forces that committed the crimes.
